“Arcadia” refers to the vision of a peaceful, idyllic countryside, free from the hassles of a complicated urbanized life. Arcadia also happens to be such a place in Greece, which is mythologically speaking the home of Pan, a god of shepherds, wilderness, and carnal festivities. Adding the suffix “-ium” transmutes a quality into a state of being, thus rendering Arcadium as an actualized place in the countryside giving celebration to the basis of humanity: artistic body modification that recreates and celebrates one’s perception of self. Yet, this comes with subtle messages throughout the shop of the temporality of life, for et en Arcadia ego, “even in Arcadia, there I am.” This is a 17th century reference to the inescapable fate of death that we all must face.. we’re here for a good time, not a long time.
